What is this game?
The War of Five Kings is a Live-Action Roleplaying Game set in the world of A Song of Ice and Fire. The year is 299AC. The war has begun in earnest, with five men naming themselves Kings. Joffrey Baratheon, Stannis Baratheon, Renly Baratheon, Robb Stark and Balon Greyjoy. It is generally* the beginning of the second book and the end of the first season.
Players take on the roles of characters from across the warring factions of the Seven Kingdoms brought together by the High Septon to formally attempt to resolve the conflict with diplomacy. It takes place in a neutral camp on the shores of the Gods Eye, central to the disputed Riverlands and the bloodshed. However, the game is not about being civil, but about getting to settle grudges and celebrate defeats, face to face.
Each player receives a personally written brief that explains their personal situation and political agenda. These briefs are not scripts, but encouragement and suggestions for making the most out of their story.
The game is split into uptime and downtime phases, with downtime phases representing a month long time skip where characters can use their skill or ability to affect the ongoing conflict.
Vie for power, foster allegiances and settle grudges. Decide whether conflict, honour or tradition will win out. There is no predetermined ending to The War of Five Kings and how the story unfolds is entirely up to the characters…
Some timelines and perspectives, such as Jaime and Tyrion’s imprisonments, Theon’s betrayal, and the loyalty of Daenery’s khalasaar have been shifted for storytelling reasons. A larp is not a book, and it is better for every character to start at the crux of their arc.
Who is this game for?
LARPers who enjoy high drama and complicated interpersonal relationships. This is a dive into the political setting of Westeros and what it means to live, love and fight as the Lords and Ladies of the Seven Kingdoms. While the nobility fashion themselves as civilised – war has brought out their worst, and their best.
There is an ongoing wargame that players can strategise over – but the most powerful resource is not maths, it’s information. Knowing what your enemy is going to do will win you this war.
Other characters can enact schemes, or blood rituals, in pursuit of their ambitions. Hostages can be bartered for, married or harmed – however you want to earn the ire or forgiveness of your enemies. In bloodshed, or in peace. It is all in the players hands.
This game is for people who are comfortable telling stories of oppression and violence. The rigid expectations of gender and honour create a framework to play your character’s experience to the fullest. In Westeros, women are primarily seen as tools for men’s goals and desires. They often need to use other means to get ahead, and still have abilities and influence like male characters. This is not a game about dismantling these systems of oppression – though it does explore what it means to defy it. It benefits everyone if people play into these systems.
This is a game about trying to win at all costs – and the glorious consequences of failing. There are years of loyalties and grudges at work. Everyone wants power in some form or another. The character briefs are written to encourage everyone to bring those to the foreground and make the risky plays that all makes for a better story. The game is best played when the character wants to win, but the player can’t wait to see what happens when they lose.
